A free or total triiodothyronine (free T3 or total T3) test helps to diagnose the functioning of the thyroid gland or if you are suffering from thyroid disorder. It is ordered primarily to diagnose hyperthyroidism and also to monitor an ongoing treatment of thyroid disorder.

Common symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism are:

Anxiety, tremors, restlessness, loss of weight, increased appetite, excessive sweating, rapid heart rate, low concentration, weakness/fatigue, sleep disturbances, sensitivity to heat and frequent bowel movements.

Thus the thyroid gland produces the hormones named triiodothyronine which is also known as T3. Besides another hormone is produced called thyroxine, also known as T4. 

Both these hormones T3 and T4 are responsible for regulating the temperature of your body, metabolism and the heart rate.

With this T3 test, the underlying cause of hyperthyroidism will be found. 

Also, when high T3 levels are found, it would indicate that you are prone to:

Grave's disease, painless thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, and toxic nodular goiter.

You will ne advised to fast for 10 to 12 hours before going in for the test. Also avoid certain medications that affects the results of the test such as: Steroids, Birth Control Pills and thyroid related-drugs.

Depending on your test results, the doctor will prescribe you medication treatment and lifestyle changes that should include a healthy diet. 

Include physical activity: Start with regular exercises and brisk walking.

Healthy diet: Start with a low-fat and less oily diet. Include more fiber-rich fruits and vegetables.

Test Method 1: A blood sample will be collected from a vein of your arm.
