The test heklps to detect tumors or cancers such as Adrenal tumor, Polycystic Ovarian Disease, Cushing disease, Addision disease and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). When your doctor suspects of excess androgen production in your adrenal gland, this test helps to evaluate the testicular and ovarian function.

Androstenedione test is advised along with another hormone test also in some cases. 

The symptoms for young boys and girls include early signs of puberty with development such as:

enlarged penis

pubic hair


deeper voice

When a woman is suffering from infertility or symptoms such as:

Acne issues

Voice change

excess growth of face and body hair 

baldness in male pattern


diminished menstrual cycle

decreased sex drive

erectile dysfunction

Androstenedione is a type of male hormone named androgen present in both male and female that is responsible for making sexual differentiation to identify the genders. 

In women, androstenedione is produced by ovaries and in men by testicles. Also, it may be produced through adrenal glands as well. 

In rare cases, it is also possible that when there is excess production of androstenedione in children, it leads to the difficulty to identify the sex organ of male or female. It causes excess growth of body hair, irregular menstruation cycle and deepening of the voice.

Women already suffering PCOS has excess production of androstenedione.


Women are adviced to consult your doctor as there might be timing for collection of blood sample during the menstruating cycle.

The doctor will suggest the treatment according to the test results with medication and a change in your lifestyle.

Medications will include:

Glucocorticosteroids: steroid hormone (reduces inflammation)

Metformin: treats diabetes type 2

Eflornithine: cream for external use

Progestin: hormone drug (improves infertility and regulates periods)

Spironolactone: diuretic drugs

Test Method 1: A small amount of blood sample will be collected from your vein of the arm

Test Method 2: Physical examination is done to check the symptoms that appear on the skin and body.

Test Method 3: Ultrasound is referred in women to inspect the ovaries and uterus.

The test is recommended when your doctor suspects young boys and girls of having excessive production of Androstenedione.

While in grown-up women, the test is referred when the doctor in conditions of infertility and PCOS.
