Alanine Aminotransferase is type of blood test that diagnoses if your are suffering from any liver damage or how the liver is functioning (mostly for a healthy body). When there is Liver damage, it causes an increase in the SGPT or ALT levels. This test can evaluate the levels of SGPT in your bloodstream, but it doesn't show how much of your liver is damaged. Due to this there is prsence of fibrosis or scarring. This test is often suggested or combined along with other liver enzyme tests as well. With the checking of SGPT levels along with other liver enzymes levels can help your doctor with more specific information on your liver function. An SGPT test are also performed to: Monitor the progression of any type ofliver diseases, such as hepatitis or liver failure. It gives assess to the information on whether treatment for liver disease needs attention through medication. Also, helps in evaluating how well treatment is working on your liver if any ongoing treatment is there.
This test measures the serum SGPT level. The normal value for SGPT in the blood is between 7 and 55 units per liter, but it varies depending on the hospital. The range can be affected by certain factors like gender and age.
When abnormal results appear after the test:
Higher levels of SGPT can indicate liver damage.
Raised SGPT level is due to result of:
hepatitis infection, an inflammatory condition of the liver
cirrhosis, severe scarring of the liver
death of liver tissues
tumor or cancer in the liver
lack of blood flow to the liver
hemochromatosis, a disorder leading iron to build up in the body
mononucleosis, an infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus
pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas
If your test results show liver damage or disease, you may need to go through some more test to determine the underlying cause that will help your doctor to suggest you a better treatment.
You will asked by your doctor to fast that night before the test. Avoid intake of food and even water for forthnight. Inform your doctor about the medications or any supplements that you are taking. After which your doctor will advise accordingly.
If any acute liver failure is detected early, it helps to find the cause behind it. It has been observed that if there is an overdose of acetaminophen, there is a way to reverse the side effects and treatment is given accordingly. Similarly, treatment is provided for symptoms of liver failure caused by virus infection. In those cases, sometimes, the liver recovers on its own. When the liver stops functioning, a liver transplant is suggested by the doctor. Fortunately, a liver transplant is now a common procedure available in most of the hospitals.
