The calcium test is always accompanied with two test panel: one is Comprehensive Metabolic Panel and the other is Basic Metabolic Panel. Generally, this test helps to diagnose various diseases and conditions related to calcium deficiency, bone disease, nerve problem, thyroid disease, kidney disease, parathyroid disorder, malnutrition and cancer (lung, breast, neck).

Symptoms associated with high calcium that can lead to various health-related issues are:

Pain in bones, abdominal pain, weakness, tiredness, being constipated, increased thirst, nausea accompanied by vomiting and loss of appetite.

Symptoms associated with low calcium that can lead to various health-related issues are:

Muscle cramps or spasms, irregular heartbeat, tingling in hand and feet and seizures.

Calcium test helps to measure that quantity of calcium present in your body (blood and urine). Calcium is required in your body for maintaining the mineral content in your body for the proper functioning of:

Releasing hormones, strengthen the bones and teeth, narrow and widen blood vessels, contract the muscles, send and receive nerve messages and clot of blood. Hence it is vital for cell signaling and proper functioning of heart, nerves, muscles, and heart.

Most of the calcium storage happens in the bones while 1% of calcium is stored in the blood. Calcium is stored in blood in two forms: Free calcium and Bound Calcium. Bound calcium is attached to albumin (protein) and other substances present in your blood. 

Before appearing for the blood test, you will need to avoid certain medications such as: Antacids, Diuratics, Lithium, and Vitamin D supplements.

Depending on your test results, you will be recommended for treatment with medication and lifestyle changes. 

When high calcium is detected it may indicate Tuberculosis, Sarcoidosis, Hyperthyroidism, Excess of vitamin D intake, Recent kidney transplant, and Diuretics.

Hence you will need to maintain a diet that includes low calcium in it.

While low calcium in the test indicates Hypothyroidism, Magnesium Deficiency, Increased level of Phosphorus, Low level of Vitamin D and extreme deficiency in intake of calcium diet.

For this, you will need to increase the intake of calcium in your diet.

Test Method 1: A blood sample will be collected from a vein of your arm.

Test Method 2: A urine sample will be collected of 24 hour period.

                       In some cases, urine is collected from randomly.

Test Report: Turn around time is 24 hours. 

When the doctor suspects you of suffering from the symptoms of certain bone diseases, lung, breast, neck cancer, thyroid disorder, and kidney diseases, you will be prescribed to take this test.
